Curiosity is a starting qualification
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It includes everything from understanding an electrical circuit to designing safer transport, interpreting climate data or writing dependable software. No single subject or career route has ownership of curiosity.
Radio as a practical classroom
An amateur radio station brings mathematics and physics to life. Wavelength, resonance, impedance, propagation, electronics and digital signal processing can be explored through real measurements. Hearing a signal after making an aerial is a memorable reward for learning.
Making pathways accessible
Young people need opportunities to ask questions and to try things, including those without family contacts in engineering. Schools, clubs, employers and volunteers can help with demonstrations, mentoring and encouragement. STEM Learning provides resources and engagement opportunities.
What M3JWK can contribute
The aim is to explain practical engineering in ordinary language, acknowledge uncertainty and show that persistence matters more than pretending to know everything. An unexpected result in an experiment can be the beginning of learning rather than the end.
WISE and opportunities in STEM
The WISE programme at the Institution of Engineering and Technology provides resources and outreach designed to help women and girls explore opportunities across STEM. Its My Skills My Life initiative features real role models and career pathways.
